Welcome to Australia’s wild West

Will the last one out please turn off the lights?

Posted by occidentprone on June 16, 2008

Over the last few days, Troy Buswell has demoted John McGrath and Rob Johnson and given Graham Jacobs a stern talking to. At this rate the Liberal front bench will be just Troy and a bunch of empty seats. A chair sniffer’s delight.

Buswell has some real problems with discipline in his party. Do they really want to be in government? Surely not. Maybe they have some psychological problems with winning, like the Dockers did before the weekend. Because any party with a heartbeat could have beaten Labor a month back – and then we had a gas crisis and the state is cactus.

And still the opposition doesn’t have a chance.

To the Libs: Will the last one out please turn off the lights – if they haven’t already gone out due to lack of power.

Two party politics = double jeopardy !
We really do not get democracy from the ‘Westminster System’, what we more often get is popularly elected dictatorship.
The last Federal Government and the “New Labour” of the UK are two classic examples.
Presently we have, in effect, one party parliaments with mainly vacant/vacuous opposition benches. It’s not that the incumbent governments are particularly good but that the opposition parties appear to have completely ‘lost the plot’.
The term “opposition” is in itself a clue to the puerile mindset that assumes the those in the minority in the house have a responsibility to refute, in total, the possibility that the majority may indeed have some proposals than may be valuable to the country
In any case, considering that, in effect, the policies of both parties are rather similar, the whole concept of opposition for the sake of “opposition” the whole idea smacks of empty rhetoric.
